EveryTrail Now a Layer in Google Earth!

We have some great news to share today:

Starting today EveryTrail trips will be available as a Layer in Google Earth. This means that your EveryTrail trips will automatically appear in Google Earth, so you and tens of millions of Google Earth users can view your trips in 3D!

Watch the video below to get an impression of what this looks like.

You can help us make this layer great by adding descriptions to your trips and photos so that other users can enjoy your trips even more.

How do I view this layer? I see EveryTrail under PrimaryDatabase/Places/Preview/EveryTrail but i don’t see any of these trails on my map.

  2. chris says:

Aha… Just found it under PrimaryDatabase/Gallery

  3. Paul Irish says:

I scoped out Mt Washington in New Hampshire. When clicking on the Left Gully 2008-01-29 trail and hit the play button, I get thrown to the opposite side of the globe where I see some Right Gully, Tuckerman Ravine trails.

    Just FYI. :)

    Great stuff though. Thanks.

  4. [...] site for outdoorspeople of all stripes stepped it up a notch this week and announced they will soon have their hikes and write-ups available within Google’s amazing productivity-crushing 3-D mapping [...]

  5. Paul says:

Is this Half Dome hike still the only trail (within the US) in the Google Earth EveryTrail layer, has nothing been posted since May of this year?

  6. Paul says:

Sorry, I found multiple user’s trails in Primary Database/Gallery/EveryTrail. Good stuff, and thanks to all for providing your trails for all to see. Happy Holidays!

  7. Mike says:

I am not quite understanding how to get one of my Everytrail Trips to show up in this Layer. I assumed that making my trip “Public” would make them automatically appear in the layer – but no success yet.
    Can someone explicitly explain please?

  8. admin says:

Currently we only add trips with photos to the layer. Also trips need to have a certain length (currently > 1 km i believe). We’ll be tweaking these criteria over time. Hope this clarifies things for you.

  9. Pinkasimov says:

Hi I try to load my trail in GoogleEarth (length 3,1 km, with 25 photos).
When I download the .kmz from my page i Google Earth, I got the path of the trail but none of my photos…
A screencast will be useful !!

  10. admin says:

Hi, pls let us know the URL of your trip. Your photos should appear in your trip, but we’ll check it out for you.

  11. Pinkasimov says:

Photos do appears in the web page. I want to know how to do to have it in the Google Earth app, like other I can see when activating “EveryTrail” in Galerie.

    Thx

  12. It works, but I can see only few trips… 4 or 5 all over the world…

  13. I don’t know why, but now it works correctly!!!
    WONDERFUL!!!!

  14. PGS says:

For German users: Go to EBENEN -> Galerie – > mark “EVERYTRAIL”

    Great Stuff, another big improvement

  15. Charland says:

    This is utterly cool!!

But… sadly the whole character encoding thing is regularly a bit of a mess. German and French letters with accents or Umlaut do not appear correctly most of the time. Why they sometimes _do_ appear correctly is a mystery. I cannot recognize a pattern.

  16. Dycker says:

This IS utterly cool. I may have to join everytrail and get my trips on Google Earth.

  17. Dycker says:

Well I signed up and am trying out a trail we did yesterday. I see you can link to Flckr photos. Is there a time when I will be able to link to Picasa photos?

  18. Dycker says:

I put up a trail. How long before it appears on Google Earth?

btw, it was easy to create my trial. Very nice site.

  19. Not all my trips are availables on G.E., i cannot understand because…
And more: there are two layers availables on G.E. about Everytrail: one is on “Places” (”luoghi” in Italian), another is on “Gallery” (”Galleria” in Italian). How ever?

  20. admin says:

@Dycker: Usually it should take about 24 hours. Currently we only show trips that are longer than 1 mile AND that have photos. Do your trips show up now?

  21. admin says:

@paolo malisano: Which trips do you not see? Are these very recently uploaded trips? See also my comment above to Dycker.

There are 2 layers, the one under places / preview only has about 10 trips. This layer is meant as a featured layer to give people the opportunity to discover EveryTrail and to display the full layer. Hope that helps.

  22. Yes, I think that the trips I cannot see are long less than 1 mile. Thank you and all best wishes from Italy.

  23. Dycker says:

    Hi admin,

Thanks for the reply. My trips, 4 now :) are all over 1 mile and all have pictures.

When I load google earth and zoom in to where my trips where, I don’t see them.

However, when I download the kmz file, I see the trips in google earth.

I was hoping that everyone could see them in google earth without going to the EveryTrail site. Is this the way it is supposed to work? I can see other trails on google earth so is there some setting I am missing?

    Thanks

  24. wwshipley says:

    Admin,

I have the same problem as Dycker has stated in his Jan 10 comment.

  25. admin says:

We are working on resolving this issue. Trips should be updated to Google Earth soon again. Sorry for the delay on this.

  26. Dycker says:

My trips are still not showing up in Google Earth :(

  27. Leighton says:

I have a 5 mile trip with photos posted on Dec 29 that is not showing up in google earth.
